As the object of study the forest stands of different climatic zones of Ukrainian flat lands and the Crimean Mountains had been taken. The purpose of the study was to increase productivity and sustainability of forests, as well as the effectiveness of forest growth potential using. The methods of comparative ecology using silvicultural, geo-botanical, ecological and phytocenotic techniques and a number of forestry and forest inventory methodical approaches, specifically inter-related, were applied. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using the computer applications. The results of diverse silvicultural research on a series of permanent and temporary sample plots in different natural zones of Ukraine were examined. Research data on the intensity of reforestation process and the possibility of natural regeneration of the main commercially valuable species were presented. The results of the experimental combined principal felling plus thinning and conversion felling of derivative and low value stands, as well as operational studies on stationary objects on tending felling were analyzed. On the basis of the actual state of forest biocenosis on key objects, new data on using forest growth potential by the forests were obtained taking into account the differences in natural areas and forest types. The utilization rate of forest growth potential in all natural zones of the country was studied. Reserves for more efficient use of forest growth potential by forests in Ukraine were revealed. Within the administrative areas, the areas occupied by low value and derivative stands were identified. A number of scientific and technical documents aimed at improving the regulatory framework were developed to optimize the integrated use of the natural resources of forest biocenosis of Ukraine in the transformation of the environment. Results of the development should be implemented in the forestry enterprises of flat lands of Ukraine and in the Crimean Mountains. The results obtained can be used in the implementation of sectoral programs to promote the forest industry cooperation with Agriculture Ministry, the State Water Committee, Ministry of Natural Resources (UNDP-GEF Dnipro Basin Environment Programme, "National Program on Formation of a National Ecological Network 2000-2015", forest certification, and so on). The results will contribute to the improvement of the project "National Forest Policy of Ukraine" (URIFFM, 2004) and the effective implementation of the "State Program "Forests of Ukraine" for 2002-2015" (2002).
