The main results of research. The research analyses and generalizes the modern approaches to the typologization of families in sociology, psychology and social work. The researches have ascertained that during the years of independence the foundations of the state family policy have in fact been formulated. However, considerable gaps in conceptual approaches still exist. In particular, in the existing normative legal acts there is no settled interpretation of the term "state family policy", "large family", "young family", "safe family", "incomplete family". Such situation prompts serious problems in family work. The result is social tension and discontent with the state family and social policy. The research has found out that in the sphere of family policy the family is perceived as socially insolvent institute which requires "re-education". The analysis of the literature and social and cultural realities allow us to define the following approaches to the categorization of families allow: based on the classification of partners (full, formally full, incomplete); stage of the life cycle of a family (young, mature, elderly); based on marriage type (primary, secondary); based on the generations in a family (one or several generations live together); based on the number of children (childless, small number of children and having many children); based on the type of family relations ( one-generation, simple or nuclear, expanded and others); based on the number of children (childless, one child, having many children); based on the distribution of roles (partner, matricentrical, paternal). In modern scientific environment the problem of the categorization of families is inseparably linked with a problem of hierarchy in the society-family-individual system. The practical value of the research is that this is the first attempt to generalize approaches to the typologization and categorization of families. Based on the international experience, the research proposes some modern approaches to the formation of the system of state support for different categories of families. The research proposes some new approaches to the definitions of "young family" and "large family". The introduction of this terminology in the course of the development and implementation of the state family policy will allow to increase the efficiency of this policy. The improvement of quality of life of the population and the reduction of fiscal load of the state budget of the country will also have a positive effect. The research proves the need for a comprehensive system of the state family-oriented policy. In particular, it is necessary to reconsider the existing approaches to a categorization of families. It is important to define at the legislative level such categories of families as: young family, large family. It is important to change approaches to the formation of policy of the incomplete families and families which in difficult life circumstances. The social policy need quality improvement. It is not enaugh to increase financial support for the child. It is important to strengthen the introduction of flexible working hours, to reduce the taxes for parents of minor children. The possibility of part-time work for the parents having juvenile children should be guaranteed. We need sufficient number of preschool institutions and informal education centers.
