The purpose of the study – to identify and to justify the theoretical and methodological basis for the organization of training activities of children with mental and physical disabilities, taking into account the interdependence of the psycho-physiological and mental development. Methods of research – theoretical (analysis of theoretical sources, logic models, causal analysis of pedagogical phenomena), empirical, physiological, psychological (tests), pedagogical methods. The specificity of the psycho-physiological functions and mental processes of children with impaired mental and physical development of the different nosological groups (the mental deficiency, the retardation of the mental development, impaired psychomotor development) was revealed. The partial manifestation of the weakness of certain mental functions and their components including impaired efficiency, fluctuations in the attention, aborted speech, insufficient development of executive function, pathological inertness of the nervous processes, the weakness of visual-spatial representations, as well as perception, processing and storage of auditory and visual information were estimated. The specific features of the individual style of activity (ISA) in mentally retarded pupils and the influence of the type and level of ISA formation on the efficiency of the labor job fulfillment was studied. The theoretical and methodological bases of formation of professional and labor competencies in mentally retarded pupils were considered. The degree of the psychomotor perceptive-cognitive functions violation of the mentally backward children was estimated on the basis of determination of objective parameters of sensorimotor reactions, the coefficient of functional brain asymmetry, visual gnosis state and the speed of the psychomotor action. The results obtained allow to determine the direction of the pathogenesis-oriented adaptive correction of the psychophysical development disorders in primary school children with special educational needs, in view of the age and gender characteristics of children, as well as the specific features of their individual psycho-physiological state.
