The rare cases of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas were scrutinized wherein the cells representing the small lymphocytes morphologically and cytochemically lacked CD5 and/or CD23 expression. In such cases, the diagnostic panel should be supplemented with anti-cyclin D monoclonal antibody giving positive reaction in mantle cell lymphoma and negative in marginal zone lymphoma. In rare cases of CD5– mantle cell lymphoma, the use of anti-CD43 monoclonal antibody has been proved advantageous from diagnostic point. CD43 expression in addition to cyclin D1 is regarded as pathognomic of mantle cell lymphoma allowing for verifying one of the rarest forms of lymphoid neoplasms.
