However, for cyclic crack resistance, including after thermo-force impact during braking, such an advantage is not noticed. It is shown that carbo-nitride hardening has a positive effect on strength, impact toughness and crack growth resistance of wheel steel. Considering the obtained data on strength, crack growth resistance and contact damage resistance of the investigated steels, a wheel steel with low carbon content (0.58 ... 0.60%) and solid-solution and nitride hardening due to a higher content of alloying elements (up to 1% Si, 1% Mn, up to 0,2% V, up to 0,015% N), and also creation of bainitic-martensitic matrix structure (66% bainite + 34% martensite) under heat treatment developed by the developed regime is recommended to be used for high-strength railway wheels of new generation.
