Based on the study of enzymocytochemical features and immunophenotypic profile of the malignant lymphoid cells, the basic criteria for diagnosing more aggressive forms of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) have been defined. In contrast with the typical B-CLL (CD19+CD20+CD5+CD23+CD43+), mixed cell B-CLL variant with the increased prolymphocyte count in the peripheral blood and decreased CD23 and CD5 expression (less than in 50% of cells) was delineated characterized by the rapid disease progression and highly unfavorable prognosis necessitating the intensive protocol chemotherapy initiated promptly after diagnosing.
