Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 A technique for pipes root passes orbital MAG welding process control, based on three loops of adaptation to technological disturbances, is developed. The first circuit provides welding parameters and torch angle correction, depending on the welding position. The second loop, based on the laser triangulation sensor, allow to automatically correction the welding trajectory to compensate the pipes preparation and assembly errors. On the third circuit, based on optical pyrometer, tasked compensation unobservant disturbances, related to thermal pipe edges deformation, by the stabilization of the weld pool relative to the torch axis. For the experiments breadboard model of the automatic root passes orbital welding system is prepared. As a result of experimental examinations was established that the proposed approach allows for pipes root passes orbital welding without lining in fully automatic mode with ensuring consistently high quality of the welded joint. The results can be the basis for creation of the innovative orbital welding machines, that can significantly reduce the human factors impact on the welds quality.
