The influence of the carbon phase on wear resistance of GS is estimated. Samples of eutectoid, pre- and hypereutectoid after annealing GS in granular perlite and after normalization and tempering at 500 С in a couple with counter-body made from the railway rail head is tested. Resource features of the new wheel steel of grade K, which solid-solution strengthening is reached due to the increased silicon content, is researched. It is shown that increasing the content of manganese and silicon steel of grade K compared with a known grade 2 wheel steel causes the increase in ultimate tensile strength ?B by 10% at 20 С and 50% at 500 С, and also 1.3 reduction time of relative elongation at 500 ... 800 С. Steel of grade K has a higher resistance to the formation of defects of type slide plate on the wheels rolling surface.
