One of the most common mechanisms of epithelial-mesenchymal transition is the suppression of expression of E-katgerin - a transmembrane protein that provides homotypic adhesion of epithelial tissues. Lack of E-katgerin leads to the release and translocation to the nucleus of its partner terminal beta-catenin, which activates the transcription of a gene-level cell proliferation and adhesion control. Objective was to study the expression of the proteins ?-catenin and E-katgerin in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa. The material of the study were samples of surgical specimens of 20 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa. We used morphological, immunohistochemical and statistical methods. The study found that the positive expression as E-katgerin and ?-catenin, determined in all tumors studied. Revealed heterogeneity of the cell population by the expression and localization of adhesion protein E-katgerin and ?-catenin. It has been shown that tumors with high expression of nuclear beta.-catenin have low expression of E-katgerin and high proliferative activity associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition.
