The problem of generation of hydrocarbon gases in the course of coalification of organic matter has been studied as well as their abiogenic origin connected with subsurface processes of the Earth. The influence of reservoir rock properties of coal and coal-containing rocks, of the composition and physical-mechanical features of the direct cover and bottom of coal seams have been analyzed, dependence of the distribution of gases in the coal seams and coal-containing rocks from disjunctive tectonic dislocations has been established. Methane resources of gas coal fields of the Lviv-Volyn Basin have been estimated as well as the prospects of the potential for modern natural gas presence in the coal seams of the deep horizons of the basin nave been outlined.
