Khmelnitsky state university in Cherkasy popup.description2 The subject of the suggested project is the reflection of the common past in Ukrainian and Belarusian collective social memory, taking into account the conditions of the modern nationhood. Indeed the historical component actually defines the national identity of the communities. This is especially visible during the periods of the dramatic transformations of the society. The comparative case with modern Ukraine and Belarus allows receiving weighty scientific results. First of all because the neighboring peoples having a great experience of common historical existence are now in different conditions of collective memory formation. The difference consists not only in different official memory policy models which are realized by Ukrainian and Belarusian government. Keeping and conserving the Soviet model of the past interpretation in case with Belarus and Ukrainian attempts to get rid of the Soviet heritage - have way deeper social, cultural, mental and historical roots. Based on this it is planned to analyze different layers of the historical past, starting from early Middle Ages and finishing with World War II events reflected in the historical memory of Ukrainians and Belarusians. Such verification allows singling out complementary historical subjects for both nations as well as controversial ones or diametrically opposed judgements. The value judgements about the past events, historical personalities not least of all depend on civilization landmarks (European/Eurasian alternative) and external factors. So the task of the project is to reconstruct the mechanisms which influence different levels of the mass historical memory of Ukrainian and Belarusian citizens.
