The physical mechanism responsible for the bipolar resistive-switching effect in contacts of a metal electrode with thin yttrium-barium cuprate films is revealed. It was found that an extra normal interlayer within a self-shunted Josephson contact does not substantially impact its non-hysteretic current-voltage characteristics. Appropriate measurements of current-voltage characteristics using two methods, scanning spreading resistance microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, have revealed an opposite (with respect to the previous data for planar bilayer structures) voltage polarity of the switching effect. Comparison with theoretical calculations shows that the hysteretic phenomena in the current-voltage curves of heterostructures based on complex transition-metal oxides can be explained by migration of oxygen vacancies in the interface region between the metallic electrode and the oxide film.
