It was found out that the activity of scientific atheist scholars had a twofold direction. On one side we have found rather interesting and still heuristic important research of religion. This aspect we can call the academic study of religion in spite of limited methodology and negative attitude toward religion. On the other side, archive materials witness that the department of scientific atheism also focused on atheistic propaganda and was committed to the activity of communistic party organizations. After analyzing the problem of correlation between religion and culture, theoretical and practical aspects of ritualism we made such conclusions. First, there was a lot of attention toward the problem of correlation between religion and culture which means that the scholars weren't satisfied by the limited quantity of propositions but saw the directions for development. During the 1980's there was a transformation in the assessment of the role and place of religion in cultural process: from a definite negative to an ambivalent one - religion had in general positive impact on culture but there were also negative aspects of this impact. Second, the research of ritualism had several directions but all of them had an applied nature. Religious ritualism was studied in the context of such topics as 1) structure and function of religion; 2) secularization, modernization of religion, and evolution of religious conciseness; 3) historical types of rituals. It was concluded that the study of ritualism had practical character and it resulted in the development and substantiation of the Soviet ritualism. The last topic took Soviet scholars away from the problematic of religious studies. It was also concluded that Perestroyka's scientific atheism was exposed to methodological transformations which drew it closer to the academic study of religion (Religionswissenschaft). The studies in the history of philosophy in the 1980's were made in several directions. First of all, the systematic research of the Kyiv Rus philosophical thought was started. The interest to this issue was inspired by celebrating the 1500 years anniversary of the foundation of Kyiv as well as by the ideological proposition about the Kyiv Rus as a cradle of three nations - Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians. The department of contemporary foreign philosophy focused on philosophical anthropology and social philosophy. The studies of communicative philosophy, which had no analogues in the whole USSR, started as well. The important part of the development of the history of philosophy was to establish the tradition of philosophical texts translation. In spite of the furious ideological pressure the scholars of the Institute of philosophy conducted up-to-date research. There was established the research of some important and still actual issues in the 1980's.
