The object of the research is the damaged wall painting in the monument of universal significance - St. Sophia Cathedral, the XI century .; microorganisms (micellar mushrooms, bacteria), isolated from damaged painting. The purpose of the work is to find out the role of microorganisms (in particular, microscopic fungi) as a possible component of damage to painting on the walls of the St. Sophia Cathedral; identification of the main causes that cause the occurrence and development of damage to the walls of painting; a description of the effect of two types of biocides authorized for use in restoration practice on a number of isolated microorganisms. Methods of research - modern methods of microbiological research. It was established that damage to wall painting is caused by the development of microorganisms. A specific complex of microorganisms with a predominance of xerophilous species of microscopic fungi was formed on the damage sites. The main reasons that cause the occurrence and development of damage on the walls with painting are the periodic condensation moistening of the walls of the cathedral, the presence of sources of airborne spore, cells of microorganisms-damaged (destroyed walls of cellars, dust contamination). Using the diffusion method, the low resistance of test cultures of microorganisms to the influence of the studied biocides (polyhexamethyleneguanidine hydrochloride and benzalkonium chloride) was established.
