The ratio between the size of nanoparticles embedded in polystyrene matrix and mean free path length and photoelectron thermalization length are found to be crucial for understanding the processes of energy transfer in polymer composites. Non-radiative excitation energy transfer from small nanoparticles (~ 20 nm) to polystyrene by photoelectric effect is established to be more efficient than that for larger nano- and microparticles, where radiative energy transfer is dominant. Polystyrene matrix excited by electrons emitted from small nanoparticles under X-ray absorption and composite scintillator reveal luminescence and decay time characteristic for polystyrene scintillator without embedded nanoparticles with decay time constant ? ~ 2 ns, and the emission intensity considerably exceeds the intensity of pure polystyrene scintillator.
