The aim of the work is to define theoretically and substantiate scientifically the didactic and methodical foundations of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in primary school. Research methods: theoretical (analysis of scientific and educational literature, programs, concepts, studying and generalization of the experience in teaching foreign languages in primary school of general educational institutions); empirical (conversations with teachers and pupils, questionnaires, pedagogical observation, modeling, diagnostics); experimental (approbation of theoretical positions, set out in the concept, methodological recommendations, content of the teaching manual). The scientific novelty of the obtained research results is: a) in the definition and scientific substantiation of the goals and content of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for primary schoolchildren based on the principles of communicative, activity, personality-oriented and culturological approaches and provide for the formation of foreign-language communicative competence among pupils, which contributes to the improvement of their foreign-language communicative experience, as well as the level of education, development and upbringing; b) in the definition and scientific substantiation of the pedagogical technology of mastering the content of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in accordance with the individual peculiarities, possibilities, interests, abilities, inclinations, motives and communicative intentions of pupils. The theoretical significance of the study is: a) in determining the didactic and methodological foundations of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in primary school; b) in scientific substantiation of the components for foreign language communicative competence of junior pupils; c) in the definition, scientific substantiation and development of principles for the selection of competence-oriented foreign language teaching content at primary school; d) definition and scientific substantiation of the levels in formation and characterization of criteria for assessing the level of formation for foreign language communicative competence of primary schoolchildren. The practical value of the study is to provide a system of foreign language education in primary school: a) the concept of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for junior pupils; b) a teaching and methodical manual on the didactic and methodical foundations of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for primary schoolchildren; c) methodological recommendations on the organization of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in primary school. The results of the intermediate report: didactic modelling of the content of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages for primary schoolchildren was carried out and its results were analysed; topics of communication in a foreign language of primary school pupils; theoretical and methodological approaches to constructing the content of foreign language lessons in primary school according to competence-oriented teaching were defined and scientifically substantiated; levels of formation and criteria for assessing foreign language subject and key competencies, subject and key competences of primary education pupils in the process of teaching a foreign language, objects of the sociocultural component in the content of teaching foreign languages for primary schoolchildren in accordance with competence-oriented learning were defined, specified and characterized; the content of the local lore component of teaching foreign languages to pupils of grades 1-4; means of training (exercises and tasks), the problem of the use of gaming activities in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to primary school pupils on the basis of a competent approach were characterized; the classification of games in accordance with the competence-oriented teaching foreign languages in primary school, methodical recommendations for the organization of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages in primary school were developed and tested; the questionnaire of foreign languages teachers working in elementary school in different regions of the country, on specific issues of teaching foreign languages to pupils of grades 1-4 on the basis of a competent approach was conducted; the materials of the questionnaire are planned to be included in the contents of the manuscript of the teaching manual, and they will be used in the process of preparing the scientific article for the collection "Problems of Modern Textbook"; a) separate components for the model of the content of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for pupils of junior school age; b) the system of educational actions and the main provisions of methodical recommendations concerning the concept of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages for pupils of grades 1-4; c) content of separate sections of the educational and methodical manual "Didactic And Methodical Principles Of Competence-oriented Teaching Foreign Languages In Primary School"; d) the main provisions of the concept of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages for primary school pupils were approved; the content of the concept of elective course textbooks, the curriculum of elective courses in foreign languages for the upper secondary school and 4 textbooks of elective courses, prepared on the basis of the results of the research topic completed in 2016 were introduced into school practice; the manuscript of methodological recommendations "Organization of Competence-oriented Teaching Foreign Languages In Primary School" was prepared for publication. The results of the approbation, highlighted in the publications of the researchers (28), in Digital Library of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine and on the site of the Institute of Pedagogics of the NAES of Ukraine (11), in speeches on mass scientific and practical events (12), testify to the effectiveness of the developed principles on the productive support of the process of teaching foreign languages in the profile school. On the topic of research one concept of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages in primary school, 23 articles and 4 theses have been published. 31 results of research work, obtained on the basis of the results of the research topic completed in 2016, have been introduced into educational practice of secondary schools and regional institutes of postgraduate pedagogical education of Ukraine.
