The dynamics of crack-like defects growth of the wheel pair available on the wheel surface is determined, depending on the magnitude of its range. It was revealed that, under given load conditions, the residual lifetime of an axis with a surface crack depends not only on its initial area, but also on the geometry of the crack front. Based on the finite element method, calculations of the distribution of elastic-plastic deformations in the vicinity of geometric concentrators of mechanical stresses in a tire material during its installation on the wheel centre of the electric locomotive are performed.
