The purpose of the study is to theoretically substantiate the scientific and methodological foundations of computer modeling of cognitive tasks for the formation of students' competencies and develop a methodology for their use in the educational process. Research methods: analysis of philosophical, psychological, educational, scientific and methodological literature and dissertation research with the aim of studying the conceptual and categorical apparatus; methods of synthesis, comparison, generalization of domestic and foreign theories, concepts and approaches, theoretical and experimental data; designing and modeling with the help of which the design of a computer simulation system for cognitive tasks and educational processes was carried out. At the first stage, the systematization of world and domestic experience, trends in the development of general secondary education based on the use of computer modeling was analyzed and implemented. The essence of the main definitions is analyzed, the new concept of computer modeling system (CModS) is justified and proposed as software tools for animated visualization of phenomena and processes, building strategies for actions, performing numerical calculations of any complexity level and aimed at monitoring and solving various types of tasks . It is established that educational institutions can use CModS at different levels of education and stages of education. It is proved that various types of tasks (emotionally-shaped, educational evaluation, practice-oriented, theoretically oriented, information-oriented), corresponding to their levels of complexity (educational and reproductive, analytical, theoretical, applied, research, creative) form an educational system for development abilities of high school students. The advantages of using CModS for designing research tasks are highlighted; the stages of the development of research tasks by a teacher and the course of solving a research task by secondary school students are determined. Substantiated and identified types of cognitive tasks (applied, research, creative). The features of using CModS are substantiated and it is established that the use of CModS when studying natural-mathematical subjects contributes to the formation of subject competencies, develops analysis and decision-making skills, improves digital communication, develops vigilance, increases knowledge and increases the attention span of students; It has been proved that computer modeling is an effective tool for improving intersubject connections and a means of visualizing phenomena and processes that, under the conditions of a demonstration experiment in a comprehensive school, it is rather difficult to recreate, and the interactivity of such modeling allows pupils to experiment and be creative.
