The goal is theoretical substantiation and experimental verification of the effectiveness of pedagogical conditions and methods of forming the artistic preference of primary and secondary school pupils at artistic disciplines and in extracurricular activities. Methods of research: theoretical - analysis and systematization of psychological and pedagogical, aesthetic art criticism and sociological sources on artistic and aesthetic education; studying and generalizing pedagogical experience and school documentation to assess the state of readiness of the teacher to form the artistic preference of the students; systematization and classification of the received mass of information, empirical-diagnostic (observation, conversation, questionnaires, testing, method of expert assessments, etc.), pedagogical experiment to determine the formation of students' artistic preference; statistical - comparative analysis. The results of the study can be used by the teachers of artistic disciplines at the lessons, heads and teachers of institutions of general secondary education. Scientific novelty: the concept "artistic preferences" in the definitive apparatus of "aesthetic (artistic and aesthetic) consciousness" was first defined and theoretically substantiated; the essence of the process of formation of artistic preference is determined; Pedagogical conditions for the formation of artistic preference were developed; the method of realization of pedagogical conditions in relation to pupils of the basic and high school at art lessons and in extra-curricular time, which covers the basic positions, etc. is developed.
