Methodological aspects of sociological research of civil society are generalized. The patterns of formation of civil society in Ukraine are analyzed and their key stages are identified. The sociological interpretation of civil society includes the existence of dimensions such as social institutions, civic culture and social practices. On the basis of generalization of modern theories and analysis of data of many empirical researches, the phenomenon of civil society in the territory of Ukraine through the prism of its sociological dimensions - public opinion on civil society, membership in public organizations, civic practices, attitudes to civic citizenship is considered competences and values, manifestations of voluntary self-organization, environmental movement.
