Then based on the energetic approach of fracture mechanics a mathematical model for determining the subcritical period of fatigue crack growth is applied. The method of determination of mechanical parameters of non-regular cyclic load on the electric locomotive bogie frame under its operating mode was used to calculate the residual life of a frame with a fatigue crack in the bogie bolster. In order to increase the reliability, the acoustic-emission method of estimating the moment of crack start is proposed in determining the characteristic of the static fracture toughness of the used frame of the locomotive bogie.
