The aim of the work is to define theoretically and substantiate scientifically the didactic and methodical foundations of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in primary school. Research methods: theoretical (analysis of literature, studying and generalization of the experience in teaching foreign languages in primary school); empirical (conversations with teachers and pupils, questionnaires, pedagogical observation, modelling, diagnostics); experimental (approbation of theoretical positions of the concept, methodological recommendations, content of the teaching manual). The scientific novelty of the obtained research results is: in the definition and scientific substantiation of the goals and content of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for primary schoolchildren provide for the formation of foreign-language communicative competence among pupils, which contributes to the improvement of their foreign-language communicative experience; in the definition and scientific substantiation of the pedagogical technology of mastering the content of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in accordance with the individual peculiarities, possibilities, interests, abilities, inclinations, motives and communicative intentions of pupils. During the 3rd stage of the study the following work was carried out: the didactic and methodological foundations of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages in primary school were determined; the component composition of foreign language communicative competence for junior pupils was scientifically substantiated; the principles for the selection of competence-oriented foreign language teaching content at primary school were substantiated; the levels of formation and the criteria of assessing foreign language communicative competence for primary schoolchildren were scientifically substantiated.
