popup.description2
The aim of the project is the designing of a fundamentally new method and creation on its basis a
device (magnetic levitation tribometer) for non-destructive measurement of the friction coefficient of ultrathin,
i.e. monolayer, films.
The objects of study are the tribological pairs, created by a metal ball and lubricant monolayer
organic films, adsorbed on atomically flat surfaces of gold (111) and graphite.
The content of the work is the design of the mechanical and electronic parts of the friction coefficient
measurement system; the manufacturing and assembling of the electronic and mechanical components of
device; software design to control the system's nodes; the designing of the technology of obtaining the selfassembled
monolayer films of normal alkanes CnH2n+2 (n = 16, 24, 34, 48) on atomically flat surfaces; the
tuning and testing the system on the test-samples; the designing of the protocol of measurements.
At first the values of the friction coefficients were obtained for the monolayer films with using the
magnetic levitation tribometer. It has been found that the friction coefficient is non-monotonic function of
the length of the alkane molecule.
The friction studies of the monolayer films are new and can be used for the development of nondestructive
friction research methods and the development of the new class of lubricants. From a
fundamental point of view, the results obtained are important for the study of the nonequilibrium dynamics
of lubricants between sliding surfaces and phase transitions in the friction interfaces.
