M-type asteroids were selected based on the analysis of available data on the optical properties of asteroid surfaces, and the first most complete list of candidates for metallic asteroids was compiled. A new criterion for distinguishing M-type in large arrays of observational data is proposedusing a simultaneous analysis of albedo and combined color index. It is shown that less than 10% of M-type asteroids are larger than 20 km, while the sample of M-type asteroids is complete for asteroids with diameters more than 8 km. Most part of asteroids classified as M-type is located in the outer part of the main belt, which significantly changes our view on their location. As a result of our search for families that could be a reservoir of metallic asteroids, we identified for the first timethree familieswhich include M-type asteroids out of more than 120 known families. The computer program to search for new asteroid families was created and tested. We selected M-type candidates to model theirthermophysical properties and detect possible high thermal inertia characteristic of surfaces with a significant metal content. The software was created to calculate the temperature distribution over the asteroid's surface layer. M-type candidateswere selected to estimate their masses and densities in order to test the hypothesis of a significant portion of metal in their composition. Source codeshave been written to calculate the Yarkovsky effect and to model the asteroid dynamics, which will be used for asteroid mass determination. New observational data on surface optical properties were obtainedfor 8 M-type asteroids.
