Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  During the growth of Lewis lung carcinoma tumor, a number of parameters expressing functional activity of macrophages was defined (cytotoxic activity, production of NO, arginase, exogenous peroxidase) characterizing theirs immunoregulatory pro- or antitumor reactions. It was shown for the first time that in early stages of tumor growth macrophages, despite of the anatomical niche, are presented as cells possessing antitumor properties (M1); in more advanced stages macrophages gradually polarize towards displaying protumoral features M2 phenotype. These changes were more apparent for the alveolar macrophages and correlated with the metastases.
