The subject of the study is physiological and biochemical processes in mice and Drosophila fruit flies in response to the stress induced by the transition from metabolic syndrome to the normal state.
The aim of the study is to normalise physiological and biochemical parameters of the animals with metabolic syndrome by limiting the amount of calories consumed and facilitate the animals’ transition to the normal state by use of food supplements and herbal medicines.
It was found that high-calorie diets induce development of obesity signs (increase in storage lipids) in the fruit flies of both sexes with a more pronounced effect in females. It was found that arginine, metformin and decoctions of chamomile flowers partially prevent metabolic disorders in the fruit flies. Alpha-ketoglutarate mitigated oxidative stress but did not influence the content of storage lipids. The participation of Nrf2-Keap1 system in regulation of metabolism and obesity in flies has been shown. It has been found that under the conditions of healthy aging, energetic metabolism is decreased whereas oxidative stress is augmented, and body mass is increased (due to excess fat deposition) in mice with age. It was also found that these changes start yet in the middle age with a rather small increment in advanced ages. It has been revealed that intermittent fasting prevents weight gain in young and middle-aged individuals but not in old ones. Biochemical mechanisms of metabolic correction by intermittent fasting include stimulation of antioxidant protection. Thus, intermittent fasting and the food supplements studied have demonstrated the possibility of correction for metabolic disorders in model animals however the mechanisms of this remedial effect require a more profound investigation.
