The aim of the project was to compare strategies of adaptation to the damaging effects of insecticides which pertain to the class of organophosphates (malathion, chlorpyrifos) on target (D. melanogaster) and non-target (D. magna, D. rerio) organisms.
Malathion and chlorpyrifos even in low environmentally relevant concentrations can cause the development of oxidative stress, depletion of cellular thiols, an increase in reactive oxygen, reactive carbonyl and reactive nitrogen species, provoke reproductive disorders, disturbance of mitochondrial and lysosomal membranes. D. rerio can be an effective model for overseeing the metabolic stress as a reaction of organisms to the effects of ecologically relevant concentrations of organophosphates. Chlorpyrifos was shown to be more toxic to zebrafish than malathion. The concentration of the acting chemical is a predictor of a depths risk. The medial lethal concentrations of malathion for daphnia are: LC50(24)=0.033, LC50(48)=0.014, LC100(24)≥10 and LC100(48)≥1 mg/L, and for chlorpyrifos LC50(24)=0.34 and LC50(48)=0.14 μg/L. Organophosphate insecticides led to oxidative stress in daphnia. The most sensitive marker of the acute effect of malathion on daphnia might be a decrease in the content of low molecular weight thiols and glutathione reductase activity.
Malathion at concentrations of 50 mg/L-250 mg/L and chlorpyrifos (100 μg/L) in nutrient media affect the rate and height of insemination of D. melanogaster insects. No effect of chlorpyrifos on food consumption and reproductive activity of flies was detected. Enrichment of media with malathion and chlorpyrifos in the larval stages caused a decrease in glucose and glycogen in the body of adult Drosophila. Concentrations of organophosphate insecticides that have a damaging effect on target organisms are an order of magnitude higher than for non-target organisms, which poses a potential danger to non-target organisms due to the ingress of effluents from agricultural lands.
