The object of study - extracellular membrane vesicles (PMV) of the kombucha culture and its key bacterial members, which were exposed under space/Mars-like conditions and normal conditions.
The aim of the research was to study the communication effects of the PMVs of the kombucha culture and its key bacterial members in interaction with mammalian cells for evaluating risks and health benefits for the organism. For the first time, post-flight analyzes identified differences between gorund-based and space-exposed kombucha vesicles, which reflected differences in interspecific communications related to the survival and physiological activities of microorganisms under the influence of various factors. Prolonged exposure of the kombucha culture samples on the ISS was found to cause modification of the lipid composition of the cell membrane, changes in its surface properties, membrane permeability, and ability to fuse with eukaryotic cells and exosomes. The study has shown that the PMVs from the carefully selected non-pathogenic gram-negative bacteria can be considered as candidates for the development of postbiotics or edible mucosal vaccines for in situ production in extreme conditions, such as space travels. In addition, PMVs from exposed K. oboediens is more promising for the delivery of biomolecules and drugs for use in bio- and astromedicine than PMVs from the wild type,
