The purpose of the work: to find out the role and status of translation in wartime (the Russian-Ukrainian language pair), its procedural features and regularities; to analyze stylistic features, in particular the level of transformation in the Russian translation of Oles Honchar's novel "The Cathedral"; to determine the role of artistic translation in the formation of the basic principles of national Ukrainian culture of the 20th century, its cultural significance and significance in society; trace the formation of Ukrainian translation traditions in the translation heritage of the representative of modern Ukrainian translation studies V. Grabovskyi. Research methods: descriptive, comparative, functional, methods of stylistic and contrastive analysis, retrospective method. The study by the teachers of the department of urgent and important issues of theoretical and applied translation studies determines the clarification of the essence and status of translation in different epochs of its formation, determination of its connection with the history of Ukrainian society, methods and methods of its implementation; considers a number of problems caused by the applied nature of any type of translation; contributes to the clarification and research of the peculiarities of artistic translation.
