The model is the basis of the method of predicting the residual durability of the side frame of the trolley under irregular cyclically variable operating load, taking into account the overloads of railway retarders on sorting slides. Based on the calculations, it was established that for 300 cycles of overloading on the sorting slides per year, the residual durability of the side frame of the freight car can be reduced by half compared to the normalized mode without overloading. The mathematical model is generalized for the case of taking into account the effect of shear stresses. The performed calculation showed a negligible effect of shear stresses on the kinetics of propagation of a surface fatigue crack in the side frame of a freight car carriage and, thus, on the residual durability of the frame. It was found that the kinetics of the development of a surface crack depends significantly on its initial geometry, and for the specified load conditions, the shape of the semi-elliptical contour of the fatigue crack with the highest speed of propagation into the depth of the frame wall, and therefore the minimum period of its pre-critical growth, was found.
