They have identified methodological principles for building a system of continuing education in the current conditions of transformation of Ukrainian society. They have developed theoretical tools and practically implemented models of continuing education in institutions of different levels and forms of ownership, in particular, continuing education for sustainable development. Continuing education includes preparing a person for full and effective participation in public life and professional activities in a rapidly changing world. The authors have identified the following key principles of continuing education: the principle of continuity of learning as the basis of self-education; the principle of openness to teacher's education as the basis of his/her self-realization in the face of constant change; the principle of systematic acquisition of self-educational competencies; the principle of motivation to carry out self-educational activities by a teacher; the principle of pedagogical partnership. The philosophical and worldview dimensions of continuing education allow teachers to realize the essence of their profession and influence the formation of students' worldview. The model of education for sustainable development in its value potential envisages a holistic approach to man, society and nature, the unity of modern scientific knowledge and social practice, humanistic values and worldview. Continuing education with a spiritual and value orientation identifies spirituality as the main source of human development and is based on the belief that education should be focused not only on stimulating intellectual abilities but also on promoting spiritual and moral growth of the individual.
