It has been proven that production and human capital, which are in constant motion and close interaction, are key among them. Using the logic of the production function, a model of their influence on the economic results of business entities was proposed. Using the historical-economic method, the retrospective of the revolutions that took place in production and human capital was covered. It was revealed that their inter-industry diffusion, the demand for qualified labor force was formed together with the improvement of equipment and technologies. At the same time, the material motivation of its holders caused the interest of employees to acquire new professional competencies. Over time, this aspiration led to the emergence of a mass demand for higher education. The need for it increased during the fourth industrial revolution. The work offers the author's vision of its essence and differences from those of our predecessors. It was emphasized that the new realities make special demands on the hired staff, setting them up for teamwork, creative solving of complex problems, mastering interdisciplinary skills, continuous training in order to improve professional competences. This, in turn, determines the role of institutions of higher education, with the activities of which society associates hopes for the preservation and increase of the nation's intellectual capital. Applying the method of graphic modeling, the place of intellectual capital in the structure of human capital is clarified, a model of the formation of the intellectual capital of an individual was proposed. The conditions under which a person acquires the qualities of specialist and the strata of which he is composed are outlined.
