The contents of the rumen were taken from the cows and then divided into four groups, diluted with a buffer. After that, dried and crushed food of the usual diet was added to the incubated contents of the rumen in the control group, and in the three experimental groups, the usual food was replaced by 0.5 g, 1 g and 1.5 g of the root of the medicinal soapwort. Incubation of rumen contents was carried out for 24 hours, with fermentation parameters read every 4 hours. After incubation, metagenic and enzymatic activity of the rumen microbiome was analyzed, the fermentation profile was determined, as well as the production of volatile fatty acids in the rumen content. The obtained results indicate a positive effect of the use of Saponaria officinalis on fermentation processes occurring in the rumen of cows. The used additive led to an increase in the production of volatile fatty acids when 1.5 g of the investigated plant material was added to the fermented substrate. Regardless of the amount of soapwort root added, propionic acid production increased with a reduction in total gas emissions from 3% to 21%, with methane emissions reduced by 52-68% and fermentation efficiency increased by 4-5%.
