Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 On the basis of wasted frying oil, oleochemical platform substances for further chemical modification were synthesized, including fatty acids, monoalkyl esters (n-C2-C4 and i-C3) and their epoxidized derivatives. Samples of commercial brands of sulfocationites (Purolite CT275, СU-2-8, and Amberlite IR120H) were characterized as solid acid catalysts using IR-spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, TG/HDSC and chemical analysis. Heterogeneous catalytic esterification of fatty acids with i-butanol was carried out. In the case of carrying out reaction over porous Purolite CT275 (5 %, 1 : 2 mol/mol of fatty acids to alcohol, reflux) with continuous removal of reaction water, conversion of more than 95 % was achieved already after 3 h. In the presence of non-porous CU-2-8 conversion value does not exceed 57% after 6 h of reaction at different ratios of reagents and catalyst. Alkoxylation of epoxidized monoalkyl esters with corresponding C2-C4 alcohols in the presence of porous and non-porous sulfocationites was carried out. Porous Purolite CT275 (1 : 10 mol/mol epoxy to alcohol, 100 °C, ~3 % catalyst) was found to provide 100 % conversion in 2-3 hours. The selectivity for hydroxyetheroester compound decreases in the range of alcohols ethanol (76 %) – n-propanol (65 %) – n-butanol (59 %) – i-propanol (42 %). In the case of non-porous CU-2-8, the reaction proceeded several times slower, but the target selectivity was significantly higher (up to 90%). Product Description popup.authors Davitadze David Z.
