The dependence of metabolic changes in diabetes with the development of vitamin D deficiency and biochemical and histological signs of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been demonstrated. The study of molecular and cellular mechanisms of NAFLD development in type 2 diabetes revealed intensification of oxidative-nitrosative/genotoxic stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress and increased autophagy in liver tissue. This is accompanied by changes in mitochondrial dynamics (an increase in MFN1- and MFN2-mediated fusion as well as Fis1-associated fission) as a possible mechanism of bioenergetic adaptation to the metabolic needs of the cell. The effectiveness of the therapeutic administration of cholecalciferol in the correction of disorders associated with the development of NAFLD in T2DM has been demonstrated.
