To determine the criteria for the selection of potential sites of herbicidal action, an analysis of the features of the mechanisms of the phototoxic action of the most effective classes of herbicides was carried out: synthetic auxins, inhibitors of the enzymes protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PROTO), acetolactate synthase (ALS) and hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPD). It was determined that the high efficiency of the action of herbicides is realized by disrupting the functioning of the systems for maintaining a steady state of metabolism. The obtained results proved the fundamental possibility of increasing the effectiveness of weed control with herbicides from the classes of PROTO inhibitors and synthetic auxins due to their combined use with the NO donor.
