popup.description1
The main purpose of the work is to understand Antarctic environmental changes 1) to find links between these changes and physical-chemical processes; 2) to study the role of geological factors in climate changes. In order to achieve this goal, we plan to study model physical-chemical processes of Antarctic ecosystem, and use a gravity tomography method as unique opportunity to study the deep structure of Antarctica without drilling. It will give us possibility to upgrade our understanding of the geological history of the region, to reveal new patterns, to discover unknown geological formations, and, as result, to clarify the role of geological factors in climate change which is more intensive last period of time. These tasks contribute to the realization of long-term scientific, economic and other national interests of Ukraine in the Antarctic.

The work aims to study the evolution of the West Antarctic geoecosystem under the influence of geological and physico-chemical factors. The first three sections of the report demonstrate that the modern endogenous activity in the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula and the Bransfield Strait, which is caused by slow subduction and back-arc spreading, demonstrate signs of attenuation and cannot have a significant impact on global climate changes. It has shown firstly that active volcanic group of the Seal Nunataks and manifestations of late Cenozoic magmatism near the Ukrainian Antarctic Station are not related to subduction processes and, so, they can impact climate change processes in the region.
The next section of the report develops the idea about the role of electric phenomena in ice on snow/air interactions in polar regions. The hypothesis makes it possible to interpret the mechanism of non-photochemical synthesis of nitrogen oxides in the polar snow cover in the dark period of the year and the effects of different weather conditions on the intensity of "dark" reactions.
The report also presents the results of the study of the levels of trace gases in the polythermal glacier on Galindez Island and discusses the possible abiotic ways of these compounds formation, as polythermal glaciers are the most sensitive indicators of climate change and ideal scientific object to study changes of the chemical composition of the atmosphere, snow, firn, and ice under the influence of current climate warming.
The last section of the report evaluates global flows of 20 halogenated hydrocarbons due to emissions from volcanic and hydrothermal sources and concludes that the stratospheric ozone depletion due to volcanic emissions of these compounds does not exceed 0.1%, but there is a significant impact on the level of tropospheric ozone near volcanoes.
