Samples of commercial brands of sulfonated cation exchange resins (Purolite CT275, СU-2-8, and Amberlite IR120H) were characterized as solid acid catalysts using IR-spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, TG/HDSC and chemical analysis. A comparison of peculiarities of the important oleochemical transformations in the presence of porous and non-porous sulfonic cation exchange resins, including esterification of fatty acids and levulinic acid, epoxidation of monoalkyl oleates, oxirane rings opening of epoxidized monoal kyloleates by monohydric alcohols (alkoxylation), carboxylic acids (acylation), and water (hydrolysis) was carried out. Only the porous sulfonated resin demonstrated the high efficiency in the esterification of fatty acids with n-butanol under reflux conditions with reaction water removal, while in the esterification of levulinic acid gel-type resin also exhibited comparably high activity. All studied samples of sulfonated resins were highly effective in the epoxidation of monoalkyl oleates double bonds, providing full conversion and virtually 100 % selectivity; in presence of Purolite CT275 such results is achievable with at least twice lower its loading. In the studied reactions of oleoepoxides oxirane ring opening, the porous Purolite CT275 provides a significantly higher conversion, and the non-porous KU-2-8Chs shows a tendency to higher selectivity for the target products. This is most evident in alkoxylation, where selectivity over KU-2-8Chs can reach 90 %. Acylation can proceed at a moderate rate without a catalyst, while the use of porous Purolite CT275 in this process favors the isomerization of the epoxide to the ketone more than the target reaction.
