For the first time worldwide, NAT2 gene variants were investigated in the context of severe COVID-19-associated pneumonia. It was found that the genotypes of NOS3, IL1Β, IFNG, and NAT2 significantly differ from population frequencies and are associated with an increased risk of severe pneumonia. Variants of SFTPB and NAT2 were linked to the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome and the need for mechanical ventilation. Furthermore, the influence of SFTPB, NR3C1, and IL1Β variants on the duration of therapeutic interventions in intensive care unit patients was established. The study results highlight the significant impact of genetic variants on the course of COVID-19, provide substantial insight into the pathogenesis of the disease and its individual risks, and may serve as a basis for personalized treatment tailored to the genetic characteristics of patients.
