popup.stage_title

Determination of the circumstances of occurrence, parameters and consequences of minor warmings in the Antarctic stratosphere
popup.description2
Research object: Antarctic stratosphere in winter and spring.
The purpose of the work: To determine conditions of appearance, parameters and consequences of minor warmings in the Antarctic stratosphere.
Research methods: superposed epoch analysis using calculated climatological means; Fourier analysis; wavelet analysis; correlation analysis.
A criterion for minor sudden stratospheric warming (mSSW) is proposed on the basis of a joint consideration of temperature and zonal wind fields. In the Antarctica, 22 mSSW events are identified using MERRA-2 reanalysis data for the 1979-2024 period, in particular, two events during the spring of 2024. The ozone response to mSSW is analyzed, its asymmetry is determined with larger (up to 80 Dobson units) positive deviations from the climatology in the East Antarctica compared to the West Antarctica. The correspondence between the amplitude variations of different spectral harmonics and the mSSW development is determined. The characteristic amplitudes of planetary waves with zonal numbers 1 and 2 are determined from the data of the total ozone content distribution. Correlations between the distribution of ozone and temperature are analyzed, and an altitudinal maximum is noted at a pressure level of 100 hPa. The features of the years with large ozone holes 2020-2023, as well as the current 2024, are considered. Among other things, vertical ozone profiles at the Akademik Vernadsky station were calculated for this period based on the observations carried out by the Umkehr method.
The results of this work will be useful for a more complete understanding of the high-latitude stratosphere dynamics, the state of the stratospheric polar vortex, and its perturbation by planetary waves.
