The conceptual and categorical apparatus is established. The competence potential of the Ukrainian language as a school subject is analyzed and revealed. The following fundamental methodological components are identified and substantiated, such as modern language theories, results of linguistic research and pedagogical concepts, in particular, theories based on cognitive linguistics are characterized. The principles (functionality; effectiveness; dialogization; motivational support of the educational process; orientation on the system of values; ensuring the emotional development of students; individualization and at the same time cooperation; comfort of the educational process; purposefulness of the subjects of the educational process, etc.) and the criteria for selecting the content of Ukrainian language textbooks for grades 7–9 in accordance with the requirements of the new State Standard of Basic Secondary Education (correspondence of the material to the age characteristics of education seekers; relevance and reliability of information; correspondence of theoretical knowledge to the state of modern linguistic science, etc.) are specified. The functions of the Ukrainian language textbook have been defined and characterized, the didactic and methodological principles of implementing the competence potential of the Ukrainian language in textbooks have been substantiated. An ascertaining experiment has been conducted, during which materials for Ukrainian language textbooks for grades 7 and 8 have been tested. The content of teaching the Ukrainian language in grades 7-9 of general secondary education institutions has been developed in the context of the requirements of the new State Standard for Basic General Secondary Education, which is reflected in the curriculum for grades 7-9, the Ukrainian language textbook for grade 7.
