An analysis of publications and available information showed that a simple Knudsen’s box model can be adapted for the conditions of shallow non-tidal estuaries. Hydrodynamic dimensional and dimensionless criteria that determine the nature and further behavior of plumes after leaving the estuary into the open sea were clarified. The application of the criteria for determining the nature of the plume for outflows from the Dnipro and Dniester estuaries showed that both estuaries produce plumes of intermediate waters that have a surface-advective nature, being influenced by buoyancy, Coriolis, and wind-wave mixing forces, without the effect of friction in the bottom boundary layer. The main factor in the plume dynamics is the wind and wind-currents, which contribute to or hinder the spread of transitional waters along the coast to the right of the estuary mouth, pushing them into the open sea or turning them in the opposite direction. In low-wind conditions, the initial impulse of the river runoff plays the main role. This was especially evident in the situation of an abnormally large volume of runoff after the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP on 06.06.2023. The consequences of its impact on the marine environment are shown according to a number of satellite images. The statistical structure was investigated using the mixture analysis method and one-dimensional clustering of empirical salinity histograms at 3 coastal stations of the Odesa-Dnipro region was performed under the assumption that they consist of several normal distribution functions, each of which represents a separate water mass.
