Each translation is the result of the translator's personal understanding of the original and his aesthetic preferences, his interpretative efforts and capabilities. It cannot be stated that there is a universal approach to translating Chinese and Japanese texts, because each genre, each author, each individual piece of poetry requires an individual approach to create an adequate and equivalent translation. As a result of a comparative analysis of the artistic reconstruction of the image of the artist in the short stories of Akutagawa and James and the study of modernist trends in Chinese literature, in particular the work of Lu Xun, the nomenclature of the main methodological directions of analysis and interpretation of the combination of modernism and traditionalism in Chinese and Japanese modernist literatures was clarified. The study proves that along with the emerging realistic ideas about art and modernist tendencies, the romantic resolution of the "artist - society" conflict still dominates in the authors' short fiction: the artist often runs away from the philistines. The study describes the main theoretical and artistic and aesthetic categories of the dialogue of literary discourses of the West and the Far East at the beginning of the 21st century. In the process of studying this issue, it was found out how the European features of Existence are reflected in Far Eastern literatures through the images of the main characters, through their searches and attempts to understand the meaning of earthly existence, through the existential choice they make.
