Study object: forest stands growing in different natural and climatic zones in the plain part of Ukraine.
Aim of the study: to improve the felling system in the forests of Ukraine based on close to nature forest management in order to increase the forests’ productive capacities and amplify their environmental and protective functions.
Methodology of the study: comparative ecology method with the use of forestry, geobotanical, ecological and phytocoenotic methods and a number of integral forest mensuration methodological approaches.
An analysis was conducted on the condition of forest stands of the main forest-forming species and the characteristics of natural regeneration across Western, Central, and Eastern Polissia, as well as the Right-Bank and Left-Bank Forest-Steppe regions. Fundamentally new findings were obtained regarding the enhancement of the felling system in Ukraine’s forests, based on principles of close to nature forestry. Scientifically grounded mechanisms were identified for the targeted management of forest ecosystems, aimed at increasing their biological productivity, enhancing resilience and ecological value, and strengthening forest protection and conservation – particularly under the challenges posed by martial law and climate change.
