For the first time, an entire range of pressing issues in the history and culture of Ukraine’s western region – from the Middle Ages to the present day – has been comprehensively examined. Knowledge has been expanded concerning Moldavian-Polish conflicts in the territory of Bukovina; a series of studies on Bukovinian local history during the Austrian period has been published for the first time. A new scholarly development was the publication of a collective monograph on the history of historical scholarship at Chernivtsi University. Problems of civilizational identity, mentality, and religious culture have been explored from a new analytical perspective. Considerable attention has been devoted to understudied aspects of the Khotyn War of 1621. A further innovative contribution is the investigation of the role of the Ukrainian literary intelligentsia in the socio-political and cultural life of Galicia and Bukovina. The development of Moscophilism in the western region has been examined for the first time through the prism of the life and career of the prominent scholar and journalist Hryhorii Kupchanko. Separate analysis is devoted to the formation of fiscal and customs institutions in interwar Galicia, as well as to a comparative study of the activities of Prosvita societies in Galicia, Bukovina, and Volhynia.
