popup.description1
Development of methods for increasing the productivity of laser cutting and texturing of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic by adjusting the operational parameters of the femtosecond laser, the composition and structure of the polymer composite
popup.description2
The report presents the results of a comprehensive study on improving the efficiency, controllability, and quality of femtosecond laser processing of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) through the combined optimisation of irradiation parameters and targeted modification of the polymer matrix with NIR-absorbing fillers. Experimental work involved fabricating reference and modified CFRP systems containing copper- and calcium-based hydroxyapatite additives, followed by femtosecond laser ablation at 1030 nm with controlled fluence, pulse overlap, and scanning strategies. Quantitative evaluation included optical profilometry of ablated volumes, SEM/EDS microstructural assessment, and physicochemical characterisation of fillers (FTIR, UV–VIS–NIR, XPS, XRD). The results demonstrate that copper hydroxyphosphate functions as an effective local absorber at 1030 nm: while it may reduce ablation efficiency in pure epoxy matrices, it significantly enhances ablation uniformity, penetration depth, and process stability in CFRP. A rational operating window was identified, with peak efficiency of ~6–7 μm³/μJ at 6–8 J/cm², ensuring high material-removal rates without excessive thermal load. Cutting trials confirmed low thermal-affected zones (~8 μm) and edge roughness of 0.9–1.3 μm, meeting applied technological requirements. Implementation of a galvo-scanner with an f-theta lens demonstrated effective cutting speeds of ~0.7 mm/s for 400-μm laminates, highlighting the technological potential of multi-pass ablation for industrial use. The findings form the basis for practical recommendations that integrate laser-parameter selection with matrix-formulation design, providing a pathway for improving precision, repeatability, and productivity in CFRP manufacturing.
