Development of ecological, economic and technological bases for the use of poplars and willows in the agricultural landscapes of Ukraine for energy biomass
popup.description2
It was established that on leached chernozem soils of the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe, the highest yield of three-year biomass was recorded for the cultivars ‘1047’ – 27.81 t/ha, ‘1052’ – 26.06 t/ha, and ‘Inger’ – 23.77 t/ha. At six years of age, poplar plantations in this zone produce from 57.13 to 62.21 t/ha of dry biomass, which corresponds to 1,016.9–1,089.5 GJ of energy. The optimal technological elements for the cultivar ‘Tora’ include a planting scheme of 0.75 × 1.5 × 0.75 m, a planting density of 15 thousand cuttings per hectare, and the application of 200 kg/ha (N70) of ammonium nitrate to the soil before the beginning of each three-year cycle, which ensured a yield of 54.3 t/ha of dry biomass. The maximum productivity of the cultivar ‘Ternopilska’ (49.3 t/ha) was achieved under a similar technology but with a planting density of 12 thousand cuttings per hectare. The biomass of ‘Tora’ contains 966.5 GJ/ha of energy, while that of ‘Ternopilska’ contains 877.5 GJ/ha; the value of this energy is 4.4 times higher than the cost of the energy biomass itself. Willow and poplar plantations within agricultural landscapes make it possible to obtain a substantial amount of energy biomass and have a positive environmental impact by absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen, retaining moisture, and preventing water and wind soil erosion. Per 1 ha of six-year-old poplar plantations, the formation of wood involves the absorption of 104.5–112.0 t of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and the release of 75.4–80.8 t of oxygen. Based on studies of the growth characteristics and productivity of energy and protective willow and poplar plantations, a database of cultivars suitable for cultivation in different regions of Ukraine has been created. A project entitled “Concept for the Cultivation of Energy Biomass of Plants of the Family Salicaceae and Optimization of Agricultural Landscapes from the Perspective of Sustainable Development” has been developed.
