Rye is a universal crop used in various directions, namely: for baking bread; as a grain for feeding livestock in grain mixtures, as a green plant - for early green fodder and for grazing livestock. The value of the crop is determined by the fact that it provides early, highly digestible green fodder, and rye bran contains up to 16% protein, 3.5–4.0% fat and up to 60% carbohydrates. Straw is used as feed in livestock and bioenergy raw materials, as well as for the manufacture of paper and consumer goods. The great agrotechnical value of this crop lies in its strong tillering and rapid growth in spring, which suppresses weeds, therefore it is a good precursor for other crops. The total global area of winter rye reaches 30 million hectares, in Ukraine only 500–700 thousand hectares. However, in recent years it has decreased from 285 thousand ha (2010) to 109 thousand ha (2022), or by 38.2%.
The soil and climatic conditions of the Carpathian region meet the biological requirements of the crop. Today, production requires varieties with high productivity potential and stability over the years of cultivation. Therefore, the selection of new high-yielding, environmentally friendly varieties included in the "State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine" for 2023 is of great interest to producers in the region.
