Physical and materials science research and development to create neutron absorbing elements using metal hafnium (with regulated structure-phase condition of products made of it) and hafnium-based compounds (HfB2, Dy2HfO5, Gd2HfO5 and others).
popup.description2
A set of neutron-physical calculations was performed to determine the neutron characteristics of neutron-absorbing materials of the standard design of the PEL of the VVER-1000 reactor (boron carbide, dysprosium titanate), as well as metallic hafnium and compounds based on it (HfHx, Dy2HfO5, Gd2HfO5, HfB2, HfС). The results of the calculations showed that there are two main ways to influence the efficiency of the PEL rod during its design, which can be applied to all the considered neutron-absorbing materials, except for hafnium - this is changing the density and diameter of the absorber. Among the materials considered in the work, which include hafnium, metallic hafnium, hafnium hydride and dysprosium hafnate have the most acceptable neutron absorption efficiency characteristics.
To develop a laboratory technology for manufacturing metal hafnium rods with a predetermined structure and texture (and therefore mechanical characteristics, corrosion and radiation resistance), the available experimental data were systematized and additional studies were conducted to establish the regularities of changes in the structure and texture of metal hafnium depending on the type (hot, warm, cold) and deformation parameters, as well as the parameters of subsequent heat treatment of hafnium rods. Based on the results obtained, recommendations were formulated to justify the choice of a scheme for manufacturing rods from a hafnium ingot of the GFE-1 brand with different structural and textural characteristics. Taking into account the recommendations, a batch of hafnium rods was manufactured for further testing.
A search and analysis of synthesis methods and technological schemes for obtaining hafnium compounds (Dy2HfO5, Gd2HfO5, HfB2, HfС) was carried out. Experimental batches of samples of the following materials were produced: dysprosium hafnate, gadolinium hafnate, hafnium diboride, and hafnium carbide. The main characteristics of these materials were determined.
