The sowing material of spotted thistle was divided into four fractions and the seeds were evaluated according to sowing and biochemical indicators before sowing. According to the results of the structural analysis, it was established that plants of large and medium fractions have the best indicators (the number of baskets per plant, the number of seeds in the basket, the mass of seeds from the basket, the mass of seeds from the plant). The highest actual seed yield was found in the coarse 1.59 t/ha and the average 1.55 t/ha fractions, the lowest 1.22 t/ha – in the fine fraction (in the original fraction taken as control, the yield was 1.38 t/ha). It was established that the yield of seeds of the initial fraction is 15.2% and 12.3% lower than the yield of the coarse and medium fractions, respectively, and 11.6% higher than the yield of the fine fraction, and the yield of seeds of the coarse and medium fractions outweighs the yield of seeds of the fine fraction, respectively, by 30.3 % and 27 %. A biochemical assessment of the collected fractional seeds for the content of silymarin was carried out and it was established that the lowest content of silymarin is 3.1% - in the seeds of the small fraction, slightly higher than 3.4% – in the seeds of the initial fraction, and the highest indicators of the content of silymarin are 3.6% - in seeds of medium and large fractions. The positive influence of large and medium fractions on the yield and quality indicators of the obtained seeds and the expediency of using these fractions (with a corresponding weight of 1000 seeds) in the primary units of seed production have been confirmed.
